Eight Outdoor Children's Playgrounds in Helsinki

  • by

Spring is here

You won’t know until you see it, but Helsinki has more than 200 outdoor children’s playgrounds! In this article, we will introduce you to eight of the most recently renovated and unique ones.

Helsinki’s playgrounds are divided into two types: children’s activity centers and children’s playgrounds. Children’s activity centers (leikkipuisto, or open kindergartens) provide activity guidance for babies and families with children during weekdays, and the indoor space attached to the activity center can also be used; children’s playgrounds (leikkipaikka) are completely unsupervised and children can play freely in them.

(TIPS: For the playgrounds provided in this article, you can find their locations on the map by simply entering their names.)

01

Ruoholahti Children’s Activity Center – Games and Adventures in the Computer World (Ruoholahden leikkipuisto)

Helsinki’s first themed children’s activity center was built by the canal in Ruoholahti in September 2024. Here, kids can climb inside a giant processor, jump on a keyboard, solve math problems, and play with sand in a sandbox shaped like a game controller.

Due to its challenging nature, this activity center is suitable for older kids, but there is a fenced area for younger kids as well.

There are also QR code boards that can be scanned with a phone to get more information and tasks on computer topics.

Supercell is right next to the activity center, and in their courtyard, you can see classic game characters that kids are familiar with.

Children’s playground in Sibelius Park – every climb is a jumping note

This playground built around a large climbing frame offers a wide range of activities for children of different ages. The climbing frame of the playground is like a series of soft waves, and the six sets of swings, trampolines and large sand pool are particularly impressive.

Another feature of the playground is the rocky terrain, which easily inspires children’s interest in playing. Its color design also blends in perfectly with the surrounding environment.

03

Vennynpuisto Children’s Playground – A Climber’s Paradise

Leikkipaikka Vennynpuisto

Kuninkaantamme is a children’s playground designed with climbing as its feature. It offers various climbing forms, as well as slides, swings and a separate play area for younger children. There is also an artificial sand-bottom swimming area near the playground, and various outdoor trails in Helsinki Central Park also pass through this playground.

04

Kruunuvuorenranta Sports Park Children’s Playground – Playground for All Ages

Kruunuvuorenrannan liikuntapuiston leikkipaikka

The biggest feature of this playground is that it is adjacent to a large sports park and has a separate fence, so it is suitable for all ages to play and exercise. In addition, the sports park also has climbing frames, swing frames, jumping, skateboards and pedals. You can play on the artificial grass or next to the ping pong table. Another reason for recommendation is that there are several nature reserves and manor parks near the playground, which are very suitable for family outings in spring.

05

Mellunmäki Children’s Activity Center – Play with cute owls

Mellunmäen leikkipuisto

Located in the heart of the forest, away from the road, the Mellunmäki Children’s Activity Centre is an ideal place for children and adults to relax. Its main attraction is a huge wooden owl statue that you can climb up and down. This children’s activity centre will definitely impress the children with its owls. In other ways, this activity centre is also an ideal place to relax, with a strong nature theme everywhere. There are lounge chairs for guests to relax in, and there is a playground next door, where ball games and ice skating can be played in winter.

06

Tuhkimonpuisto Children’s Playground – A Fairytale Adventure

(Tuhkimonpuiston leikkipaikka)

Cinderella Park Children’s Playground is located in Roihuvuori, near the famous Sakura Park. This playground is unique in that it is located in the city center, but it is quiet and close to nature. In the center of the park, there is a carefully restored beautiful Disney theme totem with familiar characters inviting you to play. Rope slides, swings, climbing frames and other traditional wooden play equipment form a simple but practical whole.

Every May when the cherry blossoms are in full bloom, Roihuvuori Park is always crowded with visitors, who like to come here for a picnic. From the top of the Roihuvuori Water Tower, you can also overlook Helsinki.

07

Maunula Children’s Activity Center – All-weather, all-season choice

(Leikkipuisto Maunula)

Maunula Children’s Activity Center is located northeast of Helsinki. At Maunula Playground, you can follow a track around the park, there is a rain shelter for rainy days, and two paddling pools for children in summer. Skateboarders will also find a skate pool designed by professional skateboarders here. The park is also shaded by old trees and is perfect for a picnic in spring.

There is also a sports park called Pirkkolan near Maunula Playground, which has a swimming pool.

08

Töölölahti Summer Park Children’s Playground – A Summer Leisure and Recreation Spot

(Töölölahden puiston leikkipaikka)

After its renovation last year, the Töölölahti Summer Park playground has become the focus of public attention. The summer park combines grassland, water playground, and beach volleyball court, providing a great place for children of all ages to play in the water and climb. In the summer, the renovated park is full of flowers, making people feel like they are in a fairyland. The renovated playground has replaced the ground with fine sand. The climbing frame made of logs is suitable for older children, and the water playground is suitable for all ages. However, remember to put on suitable shoes for your children and bring a change of clothes! After playing in the playground, you can also rafting on the scenic Töller Lake and lead the children to discover and observe the nests of swans and wild birds.

The above is the information about fun and interesting children’s playgrounds collected and sorted by the editor. I wish you all a happy time in the coming season!
